Minneapolis to Bismarck to Billings

Another early morning departure through downtown Minneapolis with Rob in the lead this time and once out of the city, we fought the GPS voice which kept telling us to get back on the freeway so that we could take smaller secondary roads through Minnesota, the land of 1000 Lakes. We stopped in Little Falls and had breakfast at Zoomski’s, a local restaurant that seats 16 and where the owner comes in at 3am to make home made bread and jam and biscuits and gravy. Great find, thanks to Google!

Our original plan had been to go as far as Fargo ND and then from Fargo to Billings MT the next day, but since that would have meant a 610 mile day to Billings, we changed plans on the fly (hard for Daryl, the queen of reservations, to do, but we did) and headed as far as Bismarck, the state capitol of North Dakota. Another hotel, another dinner and another early morning departure for Billings.

With a time change which gave us another hour to play with and no choice to take secondary roads, we took 94 West all the way. We stopped at the Theodore Roosevelt National Park visitors center and looked at the Painted Canyon, but it was so early no one was there. We saw Salem Sue, the world’s largest Holstein cow on a nearby hill and the steel sculpture of flying geese along the freeway. We found more road construction, but zipped into historic downtown Billings by noon on a Friday. Doug and Rob headed to a car wash to get all the gunk off the cars and Marilyn and Daryl had a light lunch while they did. Dinner is virtually next door at Walker’s Grill with barbed wire chandeliers, funky menu and local art according to their website.

Tomorrow we are off to brave the Beartooth Highway on the way to Bozeman and the next few days will be in Montana.
