A small sub-set of COTV attended the 34th annual Big Bear Bash, presented by Corvettes West, in guess where….Big Bear. The Glenores and Webers drove up Thursday afternoon with the bright idea of beating the rush and also beating the heat at home. It was somewhat cooler, but still nice and warm and sunny. We checked in at the Robinhood Resort, registered in the very early registration period and then went across the street to the Peppercorn Grille for a leisurely dinner for Doug Glenore’s birthday celebration.

More folks had arrived by the time we got settled in and we were all glad to have requested the rooms with A/C. We do learn from past experience! Friday morning, Doug and Rob got up and cleaned the cars and parked them in advance of the Friday afternoon car show. Most people were ready in the late morning, but the show was from 2-4pm this year with awards at 4:30pm. As the attendance at this event has decreased over recent years, the car show participation has reflected that fact. There were no C1s or C2s at all, but more C7s. The ZR-1 is still popular enough and shows well, so Rob won the C6 class.

Dinner Friday night was a pasta buffet with several kinds of pasta, 3 kinds of sauce, grilled chicken, salad and rolls, so you could concoct your own favorite meal. Bob and Betty Wells had arrived at the end of the car show period, so we commandeered a table for 6. Doug and Rob had also signed up for the Corvette Trivia Challenge. They tried to get Ray McIntosh to be their “lifeline” call, although they later found out that was a no-no, but Ray texted back that he was at an Angels game, so was no use anyhow. Although they didn’t win, they were not the biggest losers either.

Saturday was “race day” at the Big Bear Airport, so the hotel served all of us a hearty breakfast at 6:30am and we headed out to the “track” to set up the shade and allow Doug and Rob to walk the course which was announced to be “fast and wide” and lived up to its billing. At 9am, there was a parade lap and then the first runs started. Daryl had volunteered to hand out the times to the drivers as they came of the track and on the first run she had no job as almost everyone was DNF (Did Not Finish) as they got confused on the track in some fashion or another. They decided to have an “unprecedented” second parade lap and the second run was a little better. Racing at Big Bear Airport is a unique experience as you have planes taking off, landing or taxiing right next to the exit lane and so we have to stop some runs when a plane appears on the taxi-way. You can see some of the interesting planes (a Rutan Model 61 Long-EZ) in the photos. During the racing, we were joined by Mike and Doreen Alewine and their dog, Abby, who had driven up in their 1965 to see what Big Bear Bash was all about. They also joined us for lunch at Nottingham’s Tavern at the hotel. Maybe we will see Mike on the track next year!

At 3pm, there was a “shoot-out” in the parking lot with a couple of Old West re-enacters in period costume. That evening, we were all encouraged to don our Western gear for dinner – some folks really threw themselves into it and came as Wyatt Earp and his mail-order bride. After a great dinner of your choice of tri-tip, chicken breast or salmon, they handed out the awards from Autocross. Unfortunately, it wasn’t COTV’s lucky day. Then we had the raffle drawing which was all cash this year – 12 $100 cash prizes, a $400 gift certificate to America’s Tire Co and a $500 cash prize from Tom Bell Chevrolet. Unfortunately, it still wasn’t COTV’s lucky day.

Sunday saw all of us up and out by 8am and on the way down the hill to the heat. It was a great weekend and we look forward to seeing what theme Corvettes West comes up with for 2017. Thanks to their club for planning such a fun event with such a nice group of Corvette enthusiasts.
