Plastic Fantastic

The Largest and Oldest “All Corvette Show” in the Southwest

May 17, 2015

The billing above is straight from the “horse’s mouth”, the application form provided by the North County Corvette Club….and they lived up to that billing again this year, with almost 400 lovely Corvettes parked all over the grassy lawns of Embarcadero Park North behind Seaport Village in San Diego. Just to reflect on the number of cars on show, there were over 60 C7s, so if anyone doubted their popularity, it is time to rethink that.

COTV had a small but stalwart group which included Bill Steed, Joe Priebe, John Wells and Skipp Hipp in John’s bright yellow C7, and Rob and Daryl Weber, who met at Kohl’s at 6:45am and left shortly thereafter. We checked in at the park at 7:55am and those who hadn’t pre-registered did their paperwork. We ended up parking almost exactly where we were last year, with a view of the Marina and the waterfront hotels and Seaport Village. Bill and Joe worked their magic on their cars after the drive down while the rest of the group went for some coffee. Then we switched places, so Joe and Bill went for breakfast and Rob cleaned off his wheels. After that, we all wandered around trying to select our Participant’s Choice for best car in the C1 through C7 classes. It was pretty difficult as there were many beautiful cars to look at in each category. Normally it is a slam dunk in the C1 and C2 classes, but even those had lots of entries. Dave and Dana Hellman came down later and we ran into each other throughout the morning. Our really new members, Manny and Diane Macedo, came down for a look-see about mid-day and Al and Vickie Hackworth turned up towards the end of the event, just in time for the awards ceremony.

We made friends with Dave and Sheri, a couple from Vista who had just bought their first Corvette (a C7), were at their first car show and were parked between John Wells and the Webers. Maybe we will see them again as they were very interested in the variety of our activities and took a COTV brochure with a promise to download the application from the website. We also had a long conversation with our brand new member, Paul Schwab, who had his new car on display at the RKSports exhibit. He had hoped to join us at the meeting last Thursday, but will catch up with us all soon.

As always, North County Corvettes did a phenomenal job of putting on this show. Since they had come to our 2015 show in a large group and won a number of trophies, we thought it only fair to reciprocate so we took a much smaller group, and won 2 trophies – Joe Priebe captured First Place in C2 and Rob Weber got Third Place in C6. Considering the huge number of cars and the fact that most clubs vote for their own members (Pacific Coast Corvettes had 49 cars in attendance), we are all very proud of our showing.

Plastic Fantastic is a fantastic show – it is worth going for location, location, location and Corvettes, Corvettes, Corvettes. The North County folks said “thanks for coming” to each one of us as we left and we say “”thanks” to them for consistently giving us a great day.
