COTV’s 2015 Annual Car Show

If At First You Succeed …

Do It Again At The Promenade Mall

It turned out to be a nice, sunny and pleasantly warm day for a car show after the heat of the past week, but you could have fooled the early bird crew who turned up in the chilly air at 6 am to set up registration, pop up the pop-ups, set up the parking lot and the sound system. Thanks to the group who signed up to help and those, like our new member Chuck Isenberg, who turned up just to see if they could do something. After last year’s trial and error at a new venue, this year was so much smoother thanks to all the hard work of the Car Show Team, led by Terry Converse. We separated the registration into two areas, so the drive-ups did not hold up the preregistered folk. We funneled incoming traffic through a small version of an auto-cross track with cones so that we could slow them into registration and then through into parking areas in a more orderly fashion. Thanks to Tim Vilgiate, Jim Lokken, Ray McIntosh, Steve Rose and the other guys who wore the bright lime vests and directed traffic.

Registration went smoothly with Carol Buote and Willie Nagle handling the preregistered cars and Monica Clark and Diana Rash making sure everyone got their goody bags. Judy Mcintosh and Marsue Page took care of all the lazy bones who had not already registered, walked them through the process, and then sent them through the autocross course as well. In all we had 101 paid entries, a pretty successful showing.

We had a great mix of both guests and COTV club cars across all seven generations. This year we lumped all of the highly modified (5 or more significant modifications) cars together for either guests or COTV, no matter what generation, which made for some interesting comparisons. The stock cars where somewhat more easily grouped. Cars started arriving before 7 from COTV and some eager beavers and more between 7 and 8 for guests from other clubs. They came from North Coast, North County, Pacific Coast, Super Sports, Corvettes West, Diamond Valley, Pomona Valley and more, some separately and some in rushes.

Everyone spent the morning visiting, viewing the other cars, listening to Glenn Crowther’s eclectic musical mix over the sound system, voting their ballots for People’s Choice, buying raffle tickets for the 3 different raffles (each with a first prize of $100), and enjoying the camaraderie of fellow Corvette owners. Some went to the various restaurants in the Promenade for lunch. Others, like Vance Weir and Sue Reichardt and Gordon and Trudy Lenz, worked their way through the ballot counting, with Steve Page providing current data about the additional cars and their identifiers.

At 1:30pm, we had the grande finale with the final raffle, won by our own Dave Hellman (who will pay for all our dinners at the next meeting, LOL!), the special raffle of a foursome of golf at the Welk Resort in Escondido for registered car participants only, and then the awards to our guests. We will present trophies to our own COTV winners at the meeting on May 14 at Famous Dave’s, so make sure you turn up to applaud your friends’ beautiful prize-winning cars!

After the final award, it was a “start your engines” moment as the parking lot quickly cleared and the same early bird crew acted as the clean-up crew, packing everything away to be taken to storage and cleaning up the parking lot. Before we knew it, the spaces that had been occupied by so many gorgeous Corvettes were taken over by a variety of moviegoers, Sunday shoppers and other normal traffic.

All in all it was a resounding success and if you didn’t come, you missed a great day!!! And we missed you, too.
