The New Brakes and New Tires Mystery Lunch Run

.

February 26, 2017

.

John and Fritzi McDermott are among our most active new members. They volunteered to be on the Leadership Team after only a few months in the club and then had the courage to do a Mystery Lunch Run all by themselves after only experiencing a few as “run-ees” not even “run-ers”.

.

The weather was a mixed forecast of possible sun and possible showers, so 42 cars and 73 people had sent in RSVPs which included a pre-order of their lunch selection from a menu supplied by the mystery destination venue. There had been some showers in the early morning hours and John had two actual cancellations, but then 12 additional cars did not join the group. (Please remember to cancel or un-RSVP to events so that the restaurants are not on the hook for additional food or servers.) Among the 28 cars who made the run, we had prospective members, Mike and Denise Re, who just bought their red car a month ago and Mickey Diehl’s friend, Kat, who was her ride-along to celebrate her birthday. Marilyn Glenore came solo, as Doug was preparing a client’s taxes, and Harry Finch was also solo, as poor Sharon was spending time in Hawaii with their daughters.

.

The route was east along Hwy 79. Most of the traffic was coming towards us, so things went pretty smoothly until our pit stop at the Warner Springs Golf Course. We turned left on S2 or San Felipe Road and then left again onto S22 or Montezuma Valley Road. Some of the group missed the second left and so there was a gap which grew a little larger during the trip through Montezuma Valley and downhill into Anza Borrego State Park and then into Borrego Springs itself. By the time Glenn brought his brand new Escalade to a stop at the bottom of the hill, his brakes were smoking and smelling. Some Corvettes will need new tires after all the sharp downhill turns. We want to tell Doug Glenore that he missed a great road, but his better half, Marilyn, did a fantastic job keeping up with leader.

.

Our lunch destination was the Big Horn Bar and Grill at the Palm Canyon Hotel and RV Resort. Several members had been there for meals before while staying at the RV Resort, or in the case of Bob Clark, while umpiring in a ball game nearby. The food was plentiful and good, although there was some confusion in the ordering process and unbelievably, they ran out of iced tea.

.

After eating we all headed out for home in singles or small groups and ran into some rain on the way. We want to thank John and Fritzi for all their hard work and planning to make such a great day. Maybe we can talk them into doing another MLR.
